Hard Won. Not Done.
As a nation, a state and a people, we find ourselves on the cusp of history. Many wrongs that plagued us for decades, even centuries, have been righted in theory if not in practice, by law if not by local consensus.
The case for equal voice for women — indeed for all citizens — was won in 1920 at enormous cost and sacrifice by women and men from Iowa and the nation. Yet even a casual glance at today’s headlines — voter disenfranchisement and suppression, equal representation in politics and business — reveals how much more remains to be done.
The campaign to educate the public and promote the ideals and accomplishments embodied in the anniversary of the 19th Amendment presents a near-perfect confluence of opportunity and need. The value to the state of Iowa and the nation of learning from this great moment in history is both obvious and immeasurable.
Please add your name to those whose support of “an equal voice for all” can never be silenced. By supporting this commemoration financially, you’re helping to ensure nothing less than the future of equity and equality for generations of Iowans to come.
Donations will also help pay for a replica of the original 19th Amendment Suffrage Wagon that will be made available for parades and display purposes at libraries and museums throughout the year. Many of the educational materials being created will be used in Iowa schools far beyond 2020.
